This site represents an extensive overview of SEAN CAULFIELD'S truly unique art, a South African artist who specializes in painting on man made rock.

Sean has always been passionate about his art and in 1990 he saw the potential of painting on rock as a canvas for his art. In giving birth to his idea he took different colour rock aggregates and mixed it with resin compressing it into a mould taken from the living rock surfaces in nature, thus making it look and feel extremely realistic. Ones first impression is that it is a real piece of rock which might be heavy in weight but after closer examination you soon realise that it is very light in weight and strong as it is backed by fibre glass.

In his painting technique he draws his main inspiration from the ancient Rock Art of South Africa. In addition to him painting in the traditional style of the San people (more commonly known as the Bushmen) he presents a series of wildlife paintings and abstracts.

Sean's "African Rock Art Gallery and Framers" stall, is now situated in the blue shed craft market next to the two oceans Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. Here he has a permanent display of his rock art and does painting demonstrations. We also do framing of anything you may wish to have framed and have a wide selection of frames to choose from.

We invite you to browse around our website and will gladly respond to any queries you may have. We also arrange worldwide delivery on any piece you may wish to purchase and will personally respond to your query to finalise your preferred shipping and payment options.

Rock Art Tours

Situated within a relatively short driving distance from Cape Town, throughout the mountainous regions of the Western Cape, is a fascinating natural gallery of Bushmen rock art, consisting of thousands of paintings executed over many generations. The art is rich in symbolism and metaphor, and often depicts the religious and spiritual beliefs of the ancient and shamanic Bushmen culture.

The San (Bushmen)

Written by Gary Trower

The Bushmen or San are the oldest known living race. Their ancestors can be traced back over 100 000 years ago, and were to be found throughout Southern and Eastern Africa. When exactly these earliest true humans began to behave like fully modern human beings is not certain, but what we do know is that by 75000 years ago, from the information hunted and gathered through extensive archaeological excavations, features of their lifestyles must have been fairly modern, in terms of certain defining characteristics of culture, including the use of language, ritual, symbolism, weapons and art.

The Kalahari

The pure feeling that is experienced in the Kalahari is very cleansing and after this trip my imagination was fuelled with insight that I am still grasping. Since January 2004 I have been planning this trip and never lost faith that some how it would be fulfilled. Circumstances lead me to discover that Wayne Hammon, a fellow artist, would be up in the Kalahari for a month during April and May working on a ceramic project with the Bushmen. This worked out well for myself and Ray, a friend who I had asked to join me. Upon arriving we stayed near Askham with Wayne and I was reunited with the Bushmen, some of whom, including Biks Kruiper, remembered me from my visit to the Kagga Kamma. The Bushmen are small in size and are very humble people who only take from the land what they need to survive. I realised the knowledge these people have of the land is very extensive. They are also master spoor trackers. During my stay I experienced so much Beauty, tranquillity, softness and the ancient, spiritual feeling of our mother earth talking to me. It was Awesome! The Bushmen create beautiful art and craft which they sell at very affordable prices. We bought some to support them and I will sell this in my shop in Cape Towns V&A Waterfront.

Sean has been offering visitors to the cape an opportunity to own and enjoy a unique piece of Africa for more than ten years. He now wishes to extend that opportunity to customers as well as dealers throughout the world via this website. We offer you an extensive catalogue of Sean's work and look forward to your continued visits to this site.
